REVIEWS AND ESSAYS
Devotion to Thread at Woodland Pattern
June 9, 2008. The do-it-yourself (DIY)
movement is spearheaded in
Milwaukee by Paper Boat Gallery’s
Faythe Levine, who curated the current
show of stitched art at Woodland
Pattern. Having seen the American
Design Museum’s embroidery show,
“Pricked,” in February, I was
particularly interested in this homespun
version...
Sensory Overload at Milwaukee Art
Museum
June 12, 2008. Sensory
Overload has big ambitions. This
exhibition at the Milwaukee Art
Museum features many major pieces
from the Museum’s permanent
collection, and functions as
something of a reinstalled “chapter”
within the scope of the museum’s
holdings, one that tells of post-war
through early 21st century art
ostensibly concerned with common
agendas...

Lisa Hostetler on “Shimon & Lindemann and
Photographic Portraiture.”
Friday, June 27
7pm
Lemon Lounge, 2864 N. Oakland Ave.
Portrait Society Gallery, 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite
526, Third Ward, and Lemon Lounge, 2846 N.
Oakland Avenue, proudly present another "Lecture at
Lemon Lounge" at 7 p.m. Friday, June 27.
This month, our guest art historian is Lisa Hostetler,
associate curator of photography at the Milwaukee
Art Museum. Her lecture is titled “Shimon &
Lindemann and Photographic Portraiture.” Julie
Lindemann and Johnnie Shimon, who teach
photography at Lawrence University in Appleton,
Wisconsin, have collaborated on photography
projects for many years. Hostetler has been working
with Shimon and Lindemann on an upcoming
exhibition called “Unmasked and Anonymous:
Shimon and Lindemann Consider Portraiture,” running
from August 14 to November 30 at the Milwaukee
Art Museum. The exhibition pairs portraits from the
MAM’s permanent collection with 43 works by Simon
and Lindemann.
Co-hosted by Portrait Society's Debra Brehmer and
Kat Murrell and Lemon's proprietor Michael Sottile,
the Lectures at Lemon Lounge series offers a pain free
way to take in a spirited discussion of historic art
while sipping a cocktail.
Lemon Lounge is the official brother bar of Portrait
Society. Both establishments share a status as the
smallest of their kind in the city, measuring 300
square feet each. The bar holds a capacity crowd of
25 to 30, so come early to get a seat. The lectures
are free.
Catherine Ryan at Paper Boat Gallery
and Boutique
June 20, 2008. Paper Boat Gallery is
currently showing a series of drawings
by San Francisco artist Catherine Ryan.
These drawings examine the menial
nature behind “canned” hunting
preserves, where an artificial playfulness
thinly masks “what once was” the
relationship between man and animal....
Vested Interest at John Michael Kohler Arts
Center
Vested Interest presents commentaries on
political, economic, and social issues as
expressed through the mediums of clothing,
accessories, and sculptural combinations
thereof. Some artists tackle issues of the
garment production industry and
pseudo-sovereignty of the clothing designer;
others direct their work to anxiety and identity
as articulated through the fabrics we put on
our bodies; still others create work concerned
with politics and governmental policy on a
level beyond the individual...
